A Perfect Melody
There always seems to be a perfect song for every day, every week, every season, even every year. I truly believe that music can be the best motivator for college students. I have playlists for doing homework, working out, having dance parties with myself, and for roadtripping. And all of my favorite songs go into a playlist called H-A-P-P-Y! It also never fails to crack me up when I look at my list of recently added songs and the unique mix it always is. Here are my most recent song purchases to take a gander at:
The entire "Ceremonials" album by Florence + The Machine
"Charlie Brown" by Coldplay
"This Will Be (An Everlasting Love)" by Natalie Cole
"Miracle Drug" by U2
"Life in Technicolor" by Coldplay
"Don't Stop (Color on the Walls)" by Foster the People

And To Love I Rhapsodize
Since Fall Break, I have wanted to do a blog post about windows. My original intentions were to devote an entire day to driving around Sioux Falls taking pictures of windows but then I was searching through all my old photos and found oodles and oodles and oodles. The photos came easily and then I recognized the beauty in the lyrics of "Windows in the Skies" by U2. Hence the following the blog post.
I find windows very artful. I like to think about how many people have looked through my three dorm windows at Augie. They saw the same thing I did but at various times through history. I like that Jackie and I have shared two of the same windows.
The shackles are undone
The bullet's quit the gun
The heat that's in the sun
Will keep us when there's none
The rule has been disproved
The stone it has been moved
The grave is now a groove
All debts are removed
Oh can't you see what our love has done
Oh can't you see what our love has done
Oh can't you see what our love has done
What it's doing to me
Love makes strange enemies
Makes love where love may please
The soul and its striptease
Hate brought to its knees
The sky over our head
We can reach it from our bed
You let me in your heart
And out of my head
Oh can't you see what our love has done
Oh can't you see what our love has done
Oh can't you see what our love has done
What it's doing to me
I know I hurt you and I made you cry
Did everything but murder you and I
Our love left a window in the skies
And to love I rhapsodize
Oh can't you see what love has done
To every broken heart
Oh can't you see what love has done
For every heart that cries
Love left a window in the skies
And to love I rhapsodize
Oh can't you see

Sparkle
Several times this semester when my girls have come to me with problems, I have suggested, in addition to giving actual intelligent advice, to buy something sparkly for themselves. One of my girls now owns sparkly Converse, a sparkly dress, a sparkly headband, and a sparkly cardigan. The combination of finals and feeling icky made me take my own advice over the weekend. I found adorable sparkly flats that have a lovely ballerina quality to them. Then when I was telling my best friend Jackie about them, she presented me with my Christmas present. This is why we are best friends... her gift to me was a large clear-pocket book with a pink sparkly cover to hold all of my ideas and dreams. She named it "Sanna's Great Big Book of Great Big Dreams."
She included this quote by Christopher Reeve (or Reeves as is written in the book!): "At first dreams seem impossible, then improbably, then inevitable."
So here I am sipping hot green tea and listening to the Classic Broadway Showtunes station on Pandora because that's what I do when I am sick and all I want to do is fill up my dream book! While also wearing sparkly shoes of course. But alas, I have to study for my Art History final.

Half a Year
Today marks the 6th-month anniversary of this blog. On the first day I blogged I was sitting on the deck of the Green Bean, my favorite coffee shop in Spearfish, drinking a Blueberry Pomegranate Iced Tea Fruit Blast and listening to Coldplay. I was wearing shorts, a tank top and flip flops. Today I am sitting in my Solberg dorm room looking out to the campus sidewalks dusted with snow while drinking a cup of coffee with cinnamon and honey and listening to U2. I am wearing jeans, a sweater and boots.
It is incredible to think about everything that can happen in six months and I am sure I could babble on and on about all of the amazing-ness that has been the last six months including the adventures I have had, the exciting opportunities that have come my way and the never-ending feeling of love I am blessed to experience from a huge assortment of people. Instead I will present a sort of photo narrative.

Staccato- What's the Point?
When I was in band I always delighted to see staccato notes in the music we were performing. These notes are to the point and don't hide any aspect of what the note is trying to relay.
I love writing this blog, especially on days like this in which I have blocked every other social media distraction from myself. Sometimes I try to figure out what I think is the point, or intention of my blog. Yesterday I commented on the fact that some days I feel like I can change the world and other days I just want to draw mermaids in chalk. Maybe the point is to figure out which of the two days it is...
Or maybe it is... Looking for the loveliness in life and realizing it's not too far away.
I love the fact that I get to figure my life out now in such an important stage of life in my favorite places, Spearfish and Augie.

Food For Thought
So here I sit, not-so-much writing my paper, but I am not doing anything else either thanks to my discovery of an application in which I can block certain websites for a designated amount of time. Hence, I am not able to access Facebook, Twitter, Hulu, or Netflix until 9:30 a.m. CST tomorrow.
Of course, I didn't block my own blog...
This week songs and other tidbits of lyrical knowledge have popped out at me. All of which seem blog-worthy and a credible distraction from my 25-page paper.
Pandora presented me with another gem of a song. "Maybe" by Ingrid Michaelson is very appropriate for my own life as well as basically all of my friends' lives.
This next quote came from another blog:
"A woman, no matter her weight, is most beautiful where she is different from a man."
Tis oh-so true.
My lovely best friend, Jackie, sent me this quote from an upcoming Zac Efron (her favorite) movie:
"It's destiny, I think. I think that's what you hope that love is... is destiny."
Over the last couple years I have received two cards by the Curly Girl Designs and depending on what kind of day I am having, both are very Sanna-like.
I am fairly certain that given a cape and a nice tiara, I could save the world.
She dreams of mermaids and motorcycles and meeting a man who can dance.
It's true. Some days I know I am fully capable of changing the world and some days I just want to draw mermaids in chalk.
Pandora was good to me this week and gave me a banquet of new favorite songs. Here is a few, ok more than a few, to listen to.
All I Need- Mat Kearney
The Winner Is- Danna/Devotchka
Eternal- Sanctus Real
Top of the World- Dixie Chicks
Sweet Pea- Amos Lee
Love is a Losing Game- Amy Winehouse
Don't Let Me Fall- Lenka
Hold You in My Arms- Ray LaMontagne
Lasso- Phoenix
More Time- Needtobreathe
Something Good Can Work- Two Door Cinema Club
Hard to Explain- The Strokes
Awake My Soul- Mumford and Sons
Bad- U2
The Underdog- Spoon
Ottoman- Vampire Weekend
Skipping Stones- Amos Lee
Kids- MGMT
Pass It Around- Donavon Frankenreiter
214- The Benjy Davis Project
Syrup and Honey- Duffy
All from the Adele Station!

It's a Coffee-Filled Life
I hate to admit this but I just made an hour-by-hour to-do list for the next three weeks. And although yesterday I posted that it would probably be the last time I blogged for about a week, I obviously lied. I have half hour time slots for blogging scheduled on that ridiculous to-do list.
These last three weeks of the semester are going to be intense but will be greatly rewarded with six whole days in Spearfish that will be spent with family including John's sister, Jeni, hiking, snowshoeing and horseback riding. Christmas break will be planned according to a fun to-do list of exploring Spearfish with John and the dogs, reading oodles of non-textbooks, napping, helping Grandpa finish the duck house, decorating Christmas cookies with Grandma, and finding the Lucky Green Care Bear ornament (don't worry, I already have a blogging session scheduled for that one) and coffee dates with friends, including Laura Hey whom I will get to see for the first time since May 21st!
As if the gods of overwhelmed college students heard my prayers/pleas I received a package today with four, count them FOUR (!) boxes of coffee my grandpa ordered for me! Also in the mail was my Anthropologie catalog. I even etched in another time slot to flip through the catalog, most likely while drinking a cup of coffee.
Last night and this morning in the very wee hours before dance team, I chomped on the childhood snack of celery and peanut butter. The crunch combined with what I consider a food group will keep me going these next few weeks!
Thus pictures of what my life will consist of until Wednesday, December 21st at noon when I hit the road for Spearfish with new roadtrip playlist cd's for Mamacita and I!

La-La-La Monday
Many of my Monday posts have been about the music I listen to while at Coffea for my Monday-Coffee-Date-With-My-Mom. Well, this week "Running to Stand Still" by U2 has been playing on repeat for several hours. And for good reason. It is absolutely beautiful.
So as I prepare for this week which includes writing a 25-page paper for my Art History class, I realize I probably wont get a whole lot of blogging in. Or I shouldn't, anyway.
Thus, I will leave you with this song until I can take a breath again. U2 creates phenomenal music that is actually music and this is one of my new faves.
The title of the song even seems appropriate for the next and last three weeks of the semester.
Running to Stand Still
And so she woke up
Woke up from where she was
Lying still
Said I gotta do something
About where we're going
Step on a steam train
Step out of the driving rain, maybe
Run from the darkness in the night
Singing ha, ah la la la de day
Ah la la la de day
Ah la la de day
Sweet the sin
Bitter taste in my mouth
I see seven towers
But I only see one way out
You got to cry without weeping
Talk without speaking
Scream without raising your voice
You know I took the poison
From the poison stream
Then I floated out of here
Singing...ha la la la de day
Ha la la la de day
Ha la la de day
She runs through the streets
With her eyes painted red
Under black belly of cloud in the rain
In through a doorway she brings me
White gold and pearls stolen from the sea
She is raging
She is raging
And the storm blows up in her eyes
She will...
Suffer the needle chill
She's running to stand...
Still.

Feeling Green
Last night's attempt to make my every-other-week-World-Market-Jewelry-purchase was not so successful. I dropped a beautiful pair of earrings and the yellow stones popped right out. Maybe it was the universe telling me not to wear yellow...
So since I was so bummed out I didn't buy anything. I instead finished a necklace that I have been progressively working on for weeks. I finally finished putting an entire bag of beads on a super long piece of elastic. The beads are different colors of green, turquoise, white and clear and the name was "Turning Over a New Leaf". That seems appropriate. The strand is unbelievably long but I am going to wear it all looped together.
On a completely different note, I got an A on my Art History test and I am super pumped about it!
On an even different note listen to these songs that I recently found on Pandora!
"Any Road"- George Harrison
"Inside Out"- The Traveling Wilburys

Roadtrippin' with my Mama
Tomorrow morning my mom and I are roadtripping in the good ol' mini van to visit the one and only, Brytten Noel. Brytten and I have not seen each other since she started at Black Hills State the last week of August. That is a long flipping time to not see your sister!
My hidden talent is that I make great road trips cd's. I have thus prepared a playlist for my mom and I that spans a whole 13.9 hours! 217 songs were very carefully selected for this playlist!
Some of the artists include:
U2
Adele
Bruce Springsteen
Donavan Frankenreiter
Foster the People
Pink
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers
Amy MacDonald
Billy Idol
Bob Seger
Cee Lo Green
The Clash
Coldplay
Elton John
Duffy
Florence + The Machine
Electric Light Orchestra
Fleetwood Mac
Joss Stone
Guns N' Roses
Hall & Oats
The Killers
Ingrid Michaelson
John Mayer
Jack Johnson
Lady Gaga
Mat Kearney
Lee Coulter
Madonna
Neon Trees
Moby
Neil Diamond
Prince
Regina Spektor
The Rolling Stones
The Traveling Wilburys
The Ting Tings
Wolfmother
Let me just say- it is a good thing my mom likes such a wide assortment of music- and that one of her favorite songs is "Hey Ya!" by OutKast.
I love roadtrips! Especially when they are to my favorite place in the world!

Musical Monday Musings
I finally did it! I found the perfect Pandora station and what do you know? It's the Adele station. Not so shocking considering how much I LOVE Adele! It is the perfect compilation of the likes of Adele, Duffy, Ingrid Michaelson, Jack Johnson, Franz Ferdinand, Vampire Weekend, Landon Pigg, Joy Williams, Norah Jones, Sara Bareilles, Florence + The Machine (my other absolute favorite), and Justin Nozuka.
One of the best songs presented by this station was a rendition of the King's of Leon's song, "Use Somebody" soulfully sung by Laura Jansen. It's definitely a new fave. My favorite Ingrid Michaelson's song on this station is her version of Elvis Presley's, "Can't Help Falling In Love."
This station was so lovely because I was excited for each new song that would play and they all made me smile. Good music does that.
This station made for a great day anyway but to top it off today was quite possibly the most beautiful last day of October ever! In order to celebrate the sunshine and get a much needed dose of Vitamin D to run out my cold I went for a jog through the nature trail at the Outdoor Campus. I frequent this trail a lot and this time there were more leaves scattered on the ground which made a lovely crunch as I ran through.
After my run I stopped and got what will probably be my last Passion Fruit Iced Tea for a few months. Perfect way to journey into November!
Here are some of the best songs from the Adele station:
Broken- Jack Johnson
Make You Feel My Love- Adele
Take Me Out- Franz Ferdinand
Rumour Has It- Adele
And The World Turned- The Gabe Dixon Band
A Punk- Vampire Weekend
Mercy- Duffy
Falling In Love At A Coffee Shop- Landon Pigg
One Of Those Days- Joy Williams
1901- Phoenix
Many The Miles- Sara Bareilles
Dog Days Are Over- Florence + The Machine (This will always and forever be my absolute favorite
song!)
I'm Scared- Duffy
After Tonight- Justin Nozuka
Bottle It Up- Sara Bareilles

Great Mondays
I am starting a new addition to my blog: What Makes Mondays Great. I realize that some weeks I may have to make things up but thats fine! Today however had lots of great things!
- Coffea date in the middle of the day with my mom! I am loving the four hour break that I have on Mondays. We are making it an every week thing! My hazelnut latte with candied hazelnuts was just about the greatest thing ever!
- I changed into shorts and a t-shirt in the middle of the day!!! The title of this blog probably indicates to you that I love summer and summer clothing way more than winter and winter clothing.
- Laffy Taffy Jokes!
How do you mend a broken jack o'lantern?
With a pumpkin patch!
- I started a new passive programming technique this year where I gave all of my girls a blank cd to put all their favorite songs on it. Their theme songs, if you will. Each weekend I play a different cd on repeat in the bathroom and each girl has her chance to be the 2N Weekend Dj. Two of my girls thus far have included "Daylight" by Matt and Kim and it has quickly become my new favorite song and the video is adorable!
Happy Monday everyone! Here is to a great Tuesday!

Love and the Three of Us
I always refer to my mom, my sister, Brytten, and myself as 'the three of us.' We have been one unit for as long as I can remember and we just go together. We are sisters, daughters, and friends. Nearly three years ago my mom got all three of us a simple ring that is a silver band with "May Your Wildest Dreams Come True" engraved around the outside. I have worn it every day since and my mom calls them our solidarity rings. Today is my mom's birthday which comes at a time during a very transitional stage for all three of us. I hope that she finds her next adventure during this next Jenny-year!
I heard this song on John's satellite radio as we were on our way to the Bighorns this summer. It was then stuck in my head for the rest of the trip and I have been a big fan ever since. The lyrics are beautiful and seem fitting for any day but particularly today.
If I were the sea I would love to see you smile at me
Walk the shore a mile with me
If I were the trees I would love to shade you with my leaves
I'd clean the air for you to breathe
If I were you, I would love I would love I would love
If I were a song I would love to be a symphony
All together in harmony
If I were the earth I would love to give you all that you need
But you keep taking more from me
If I were you, I would love I would love I would love
Should it be so bad
To want to do something good
When this world tries to bring me down
I would love I would love I would love
If I were a book I would love to educate the youth
Open minds by telling the truth
If I were a pen I would love to write to your friend
I’d be so proud of the love we send
If I were you, I would love I would love I would love
Should it be so bad
To want to do something good
If this life tries to get me down I would love I would love I would love
If I were money I would love to end poverty
Instead they keep on wasting me
If I were a gun I would love to never kill anyone
Melt me down and make me something fun
If I were you, I would love I would love I would love
Today is also Talk Like a Pirate Day which ironically coincides with my Mom's birthday.
Aaaaargh Matey!

I've Got The Music In Me
I had to write a post about this because it cracked me up. Frequently I go on a little iTunes spending spree and my most recent compilation of new music is quite comical because of the vast array of genres of music and artists.
The artists making up my Recently Added playlist:
Mat Kearney
Neil Diamond
AC/DC
The Script
The Hooters
Lady Gaga
Martin Solveig and Dragonette
Nicki Minaj
Pitbull
Maroon 5
Beyonce
Augean Stables
Bob Dylan
Huey Lewis & The News
Kenny Loggins
The Traveling Wilburys
S. J. (Woo Hoo, just like me!!!!)
Amos Lee
Fred Astaire
Until this spree I was painfully unaware of The Traveling Wilburys until Jackie mentioned that her theme song is End of the Line by them. The band was composed of Bob Dylan, George Harrison, Jeff Lynne, Roy Orbinson and Tom Petty- all greats!. After my aunts Jackie and Jodie introduced them to me I started to listen to some of their songs and to Jodie's amusement I said, "This sounds a little Tom Petty-esque."
After Jackie brought up what her theme song I realized I have several theme songs probably depending what mood I am in or more likely what part of the year it is.
Currently my theme songs are:
Dog Days Are Over by Florence and the Machine
Every Teardrop is a Waterfall by Coldplay
And We Danced by The Hooters
Hair by Lady Gaga
Here Comes the Sun by George Harrison
Rock 'n Roll All Nite by KISS
Raspberry Beret by Prince
I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles) by The Proclaimers
It's Gonna Be a Lovely Day by S.O.U.L.S.Y.S.T.E.M.
American Girl by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers
Beautiful Day by U2
Folding Chair by Regina Spektor
One and Only by Adele
Rolling in the Deep by Adele
Ok so I have a lot of theme songs but I want to hear what your theme song is! Leave me a comment with the song title!

Quips from Grandpa
This morning I pulled into my aunt and uncle's driveway at 5:53 a.m. and shortly thereafter John and I left to go hiking up Old Baldy. It was a great hike! It was super muddy but luckily I am the granddaughter of Jeanne Becht because less than 12 hours later and my shoes look brand new. The woman loves doing laundry, thats for sure!
After the hike I quickly went home and got cleaned up and went to work. I was asked to attend the executive board meeting which was quite interesting and may have convinced me I need to work there for several decades but I was there until after 6 p.m. So, I didn't get a whole lot of time with The Grands. When I got home I walked out to the shop and helped my grandpa with the truck seat he is upholstering for a friend.
My grandpa tends to be a man of very few words and he is the only person in the world I could sit with for days and days and not need to say anything. However, tonight he was unusually chatty! As he was taking stitches out he kept saying, "Ooops." Then he went into describing a friend he used to fish with in St. Paul who was a surgeon and would always say that the most commonly used word in the surgery room was, "Oops."
We continued to talk about how we both have a hidden love for the good old kind of country music, particularly Willie Nelson and Johnny Cash. I also informed him that when I was little I used to think I was the only Sanna in the entire world and was rather crushed when I realized I wasn't. I used to also think that I would never meet another Roger and that my grandpa was the only one I would ever know. Also not true. One of our volunteers at the fish hatchery is named Roger (and actually knows my Roger). This new Roger and I had a lovely conversation on Sunday at the Father's Day Brunch but I may have to rename him.
When we were about to walk back to the house for supper we stopped to collect eggs. Here is a tidbit of information that I learned this week and probably never would have if I wasn't living in Spearfish for the summer. When chickens are old enough to lay eggs but not quite full-sized yet their eggs are called pullet eggs and are quite smaller than normal eggs, nearly half the size of the eggs we are used to. Like I said, I would never have learned that if I wasn't living with Roger.

Summery Food and Music
As I promised in the Rules of Summer post I have a recipe for a great summer dish and a summer playlist.
First, this little tidbit:
4-year-old Cousin: "Do you catch fish at the fish hatchery?"
Me: "Nope"
Cousin: "Do you eat fish at the fish hatchery?"
Me: "Nope"
Cousin: "Then what do you do at the fish hatchery?"
Me: "You will never know."
Working at a fish hatchery and not being involved with the fish in any way is difficult for anyone to understand.

Recipe for Grilled Basil-Marinated Chicken:
Ingredients
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 tablespoon red wine vinegar
- 1 tablespoon chopped basil leaves
- 1 tablespoon finely chopped red onion
- 2 teaspoons kosher salt or sea salt
- 1 teaspoon whole black peppercorns
- 1 clove garlic, chopped
- 4 boneless, skinless chicken breast halves
Directions
Whisk together the oil, vinegar, basil, onion, salt, peppercorns, and garlic in a bowl. Transfer the marinade to a gallon-sized sealable plastic bag with the chicken and shake to combine. Refrigerate for at least 3 hours and up to 12 hours.
When ready to cook, build a charcoal fire or preheat gas grill.
Remove chicken from the marinade. Grill the chicken, turning once, until browned and just cooked through, about 4 minutes per side. Transfer the chicken to a platter and garnish with the basil sprigs.
This turned out to be DELICIOUS. Unfortunately I had to serve hungry little kids so there aren't any pictures, but trust me it was delightful and a perfect summer meal to grill!

Don't Be Fancy, Just Get Dancey
Last night was one of the best nights ever. My cousins are staying at Grandma and Grandpa's this week so of course being the good big cousin that I am, I have all sorts of fun things planned. I learned that the four-year-old loves dance parties so much so that she even raises her voice when she says we are going to partaaaaaaaaaay! That's exactly what we did. The two of us girls had a dance party to the likes of Katy Perry and Pink and the little girl knows every word to 'Firework' and 'Raise Your Glass.' We topped off the night with a more kid-friendly reading of 'The Cat in the Hat.'
I am fairly certain dance parties and jumping on the bed will be an adequate replacement to my normal workouts for the week!
Also, don't be surprised when most of the postings this week are about the adventures I have with my cousins!

A Spark of Entertainment on a Rainy Day
It is a dreary, rainy day in Spearfish so I thought posting this video was a good solution to the craptastic weather. One of my best friends, Becca and I blast this song, Dog Days Are Over by Florence and the Machine, while we drive around Sioux Falls in her car every time she is home from St. Ben's. I know cute baby videos are getting a bit overdone but this one is just wonderful. The baby also resembles me and Becca dancing to song in the car as well! Some days I think this song, which happens to be the most frequently played song in my iTunes has the same affect on me as it does on this baby.
Every season always seems to have a designated song for me and this song was the anthem for last summer! I am still waiting to see what this summer's anthem will be!
